What Do You Believe About the Scriptures? Bible Study Lesson 2

Bible Study Lesson 2                                                                 May 18, 2014
Knowing what you believe in the realm of spiritual things is critical to living the life that God intends us to live in every areas of life.  Psalm 119:130 says: “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple;” without this light we walk in darkness (Acts 26:15-18; Ephesians 5:8-11). Everyone needs the light of God’s Word in order to be established in the faith necessary to please God.  We cannot please God without faith and faith comes from the exposure to God’s Word (Hebrews 11:6; Roman 10:17).  Therefore the community of faithful believers called Bluelick Bible Church declares at the outset the importance of the authoritative, inerrant, inspired and preserved Bible which is The Word of God.
This lesson will continue our look at the doctrine of The Scriptures. How we should thank God for the Holy Bible!
Article III:  DECLARATION OF FAITH
This church receives the Bible as the all sufficient basis of faith, doctrine, and practice (John 17:17; Proverbs 30:5, 6).
Section A.  The Scriptures:  We believe that every Word in every part of the original manuscripts of the Bible is given by inspiration of God (2 Peter 1:21; 2 Timothy 3:16). It is truth without any mixture or error.  We believe the Bible to be the center of true Christian unity and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds and opinions shall be tried (2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 2 Peter 1:19 – 21).  We believe that God has preserved His entire Word to us today through various manuscript copies and translations.  All teaching being done under the direction of this ministry will be conducted using the King James Version.
1.      How would you define “original manuscripts”?

2.      Read 2 Peter 1:21.  Where did the scriptures come from?

3.      How would you define “inspiration”? (2 Tim. 3:16)

4.      What are the four areas that the scriptures profit us?                       See 2 Tim. 3:16, 17.

5.      Read 2 Peter 1:19 – 21.  How were these holy men influenced by the Holy Spirit?

6.      What kind of prophecy is given in the Bible?  See 2 Peter 1:19; Psalm 19:7b; 93:5a; 111:7b.

7.      Why should we pay close attention to the Scriptures? (2 Pet. 1:19)

8.      What attitude do we need to have toward God’s Word?

a.      Psalm 119:97
b.      1 Peter 2:2

9.      What habits do we need to develop with God’s Word?

a.      Acts 17:11; 2 Timothy 2:15
b.      Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:2
c.       James 1:22 – 25
10.   “The doctrine of preservation is based on the Bible itself.  Since the Bible is to be our authority in matters of faith and practice, it is important to see what God has stated about its preservation for each generation.”  What do you learn about the Word being kept and made available for us today?
a.      Psalm 105:8
b.      Psalm 119:89
c.       Psalm 119:16
d.      Matthew 24:35
e.      1 Peter 1:23 – 25
Today there is a lot of discussion about translations and versions of the Bible.  Bluelick Bible Church believes that the King James Bible is a literal and accurate translation of the Word of God.  Further we have determined that for the sake of unity and consistence the KJV will be the translation that will be used for all teaching and preaching in this ministry.
